PRIMARY FUNCTION

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, and to receive direction from certificated staff, perform a variety of paraprofessional, instructional, health-related, and clerical tasks as directed by instructional personnel or credentialed school nurse, to work in a variety of settings with students diagnosed with chronic health conditions, or moderate to severe physical, emotional, social, academic, medical, or behavioral disabilities; and to perform related work as required, consistent with the job description.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Directly responsible to designated administrators.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assists in the instruction and training of students from all disability categories and medical diagnoses, including those with chronic health conditions, severe disabilities and/or emotional/behavioral disabilities.
  • Educational activities may include facilitating the development of academic, perceptual and psychomotor, social/behavioral, self-help, prevocational and vocational, adaptive, health maintenance, and speech/language skills.
  • Other activities include the delivery of related services such as behavior management, accompanying students on field trips and community outings, assistance with personal hygiene and care, including activities of daily living related to toileting, self-care, and eating.
  • Supervision of students may be conducted inside and outside the classroom.
  • Oversees and supervises students during activities that provide students with critical and functional life skills which may include social, health maintenance, use of community resources, and learning community safety on campus, in classrooms, media center, and on field trips.
  • Health Aides administer basic first aid and provide health services to students and staff in accordance with state laws and established District policies and procedures;
  • Conducts routine and emergency health observations, routine treatments, and referral services;
  • Assists in prevention, detection, and monitoring of health related problems;
  • Perform specialized physical health care services under the direction of a credentialed school nurse (e.g. G-tube feeding, catheterization, diabetes management, medication administration, tracheostomy suctioning and administering medication when indicated in accordance with provisions in the Education Code.).
  • Duties may involve strenuous physical activities such as lifting students from wheel chairs or utilizing adaptive equipment.
  • Training will be provided, as appropriate, in other specialized services including but not limited to, crisis prevention/physical management, CPR and First Aid, Blood Born Pathogens training, Intensive Individualized Instruction, occupational/physical therapy, inclusion/main streaming, MAA, and ProAct, and will carry out such services under supervision of a credentialed staff member.
  • Clerical duties may include filing and duplicating materials, maintaining student records, computers and records data, and operating audio-visual and computer equipment.
  • Can perform all of the duties of a Resource Classroom Assistant I- Special Education and Classroom Assistant III.
  • Other duties may be assigned based on student and program needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Basic medical information relating to disabilities, chronic health conditions, and developmental needs of school age students.
  • Operation of a computer and assigned software.
  • Techniques for dealing with students with various physical, learning, medical and/or emotional disabilities.
  • Record keeping practices.
  • School office administrative practices, procedures and terminology.
  • Worksite and District first aid procedures.
  • Basic subjects taught in District schools, including mathematics, grammar, spelling, language and reading.
  • Child guidance principles and practices.
  • Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
  • Basic instructional methods and techniques.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.
  • Operation of standard office and classroom equipment.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.

Ability to:

  • Assist students in performing tasks and helping them to achieve curriculum expectations.
  • Work efficiently, positively, patiently and unemotionally; displaying mature self-control with handicapped students with a variety of disabilities.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance to HIPAA and FERPA guidelines regarding program participants and health records.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and administration.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Use sound independent judgment within general procedural guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate records as needed.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.
  • Reinforce instruction to individual or small groups of students as directed by the teacher.
  • Learn and apply appropriate methods, procedures and limitations in the assigned instructional environment.

  • Monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress according to approved policies and procedures.

  • Perform clerical duties related to classroom activities.

  • Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.
  • Move hands and fingers to operate standard office and classroom equipment.
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Bend at the waist, kneel or crouch to assist students.
  • See to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities.
  • Hear and speak to communicate/exchange information in person, in front of groups and over the telephone.
  • Hearing and speech to communicate in person, in front of groups and over the telephone
  • Reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be available for changes in job locations, duties and, hours.
  • Must be available to travel to various assigned sites (Mileage reimbursement available when applicable).
  • Physical Demands:

Must possess mobility to work in a variety of settings and use specialized educational, medical equipment and a computer, strength and stamina to physically manage children weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance and engage in strenuous physical activities.

EDUCATION, LICENCE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Any combination equivalent to: Graduation from high school, one year experience in an instructional setting.
  • NCLB Paraprofessional requirement can be met by completion of ONE of the following:
  • NHUSD/ACOE No Child Left Behind Paraeducator Certificate, California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST), Completion of two years college (48 semester units) or A.A. degree (or higher).
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
