Dear NHUSD Families,
Welcome back to the 2022-23 school year. As a reminder, the first day of school for our students is Wednesday, August 10. Please note that we have new start times for our middle schools and for James Logan High School. Our middle schools start at 8:15 a.m. and James Logan High School will start at 8:30.
I am excited about the start of this school year. This is the first year in several that feels somewhat “normal.” I’m looking forward to spending more time focusing on student achievement and continuing to make our learning environments the best they can be.
That isn’t to say that we won’t face challenges, we do every year. I feel confident that our students, families, and staff can handle whatever comes our way.
Speaking of challenges, COVID-19 is still present. At our board meeting earlier this week, our Board of Trustees approved the latest revisions to our Continuity of Services Plan, which describes all of our COVID-related procedures and processes. This document can be found on our website. As always, we have been following the guidance of our public health officials and there aren’t any dramatic changes to their guidance for the start of school. There are, however, COVID-related protocols such as close contact and quarantine procedures in place. Based on what I am hearing from our public health officials, this current COVID wave is slowing down, however, we all know that things can change pretty quickly.
The other health-related issue we are keeping track of is the monkeypox outbreak. As of today, it does not appear to be something we need to worry about in our schools. We are working closely with public health officials to make sure we are ready if anything changes.
Another challenge we continue to face is the staffing shortage that is impacting schools across the state and country. We are in pretty good shape in regards to our teaching positions and have almost all of our hiring completed. We continue to struggle to find para educators and will start the year, like we did last year, with many unfilled positions. If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a para educator, please contact our personnel department. We offer competitive hourly rates and a very good benefits package.
This is the final year of our three-year strategic planning cycle and our community will continue to see changes that improve conditions in our schools. One of them is the transition to a new student information system. When fully implemented, this system will make it much easier for our students, families and staff members to access critical information. We have been planning for this for two years however there are always unanticipated challenges when this type of transition happens. Please be patient with us. We are committed to fixing any problems as quickly as possible.
Something else that is new this year is the “Eliminate Hate Speech” campaign that we will be launching in our schools at the start of the year. We have a great, inclusive community in our district. However, it is easy for our community to get disrupted by the hate-related events that we have seen take place across the country, in the news, on social media, and that have occurred locally. We are committed to creating inclusive and equitable conditions for our students and staff members, and there is no place for hate speech or related conduct in our district. Our families and students will see very intentional efforts in our schools to educate our students about the devastating effects of hate related conduct and what to do if they encounter it.

Bienvenidos al año escolar 2022-23. Como recordatorio, el primer día de clases para nuestros estudiantes es el miércoles 10 de agosto. Por favor, tenga en cuenta que tenemos un horario nuevo de inicio para nuestras secundarias y para la preparatoria James Logan. Nuestras secundarias comienzan a las 8:15 a.m. y la Preparatoria James Logan comienza a las 8:30.
Estoy emocionado por el inicio de este año escolar. Este es el primer año en varios que se siente algo “normal”. Estoy esperando pasar más tiempo enfocado en los logros de los estudiantes y continuar haciendo que nuestros ambientes de aprendizaje sean los mejores posibles.
Eso no quiere decir que no tengamos que enfrentarnos a retos, lo hacemos todos los años. Confío en que nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal puedan afrontar cualquier cosa que se nos presente.
Hablando de retos, COVID-19 sigue presente. En nuestra junta del Consejo a principios de esta semana, el Consejo Administrativo aprobó las últimas revisiones de nuestro Plan de Continuidad de Servicios, que describe todos nuestros procedimientos y procesos relacionados con COVID. Este documento se puede encontrar en nuestra página web. Como siempre, hemos estado siguiendo la guía de nuestros oficiales de salud pública y no hay ningún cambio dramático para el comienzo de clases. Sin embargo, existen protocolos relacionados con COVID, como el contacto cercano y los procedimientos de cuarentena. De acuerdo a la información que he recibido de nuestros oficiales de salud pública, la ola actual de COVID está disminuyendo, sin embargo, todos sabemos que las cosas pueden cambiar muy rápidamente.
El otro tema relacionado con la salud que estamos siguiendo es el brote de viruela del mono. Al día de hoy, no parece ser algo de lo que tengamos que preocuparnos en nuestras escuelas. Estamos trabajando estrechamente con los oficiales de salud pública para asegurarnos de que estamos preparados si algo cambia.
Otro reto que seguimos enfrentando es la escasez de personal que está afectando a las escuelas en todo el estado y el país. Estamos en condiciones muy buenas en lo que respecta a nuestros puestos de enseñanza y tenemos casi todas nuestras contrataciones completadas. Seguimos batallando para encontrar paraeducadores y comenzaremos el año, como lo hicimos el año pasado, con muchos puestos sin cubrir. Si usted o alguien que usted conoce está interesado en ser un paraeducador, por favor, comuníquese con nuestro departamento de personal. Ofrecemos salarios competitivos por hora y un paquete de prestaciones muy bueno.
Este es el último año de nuestro ciclo de tres años de planificación estratégica y nuestra comunidad seguirá viendo cambios para mejorar las condiciones de nuestras escuelas. Uno de ellos es la transición a un nuevo sistema de información estudiantil. Cuando esté totalmente implementado, este sistema facilitará mucho el acceso de nuestros estudiantes, familias y miembros del personal a información importante. Hemos estado planeando esto durante dos años, sin embargo, siempre hay problemas imprevistos cuando se produce este tipo de transición. Le pedimos que sea paciente con nosotros. Nos comprometemos a solucionar cualquier problema lo antes posible.
Algo nuevo este año es la campaña “Eliminate Hate Speech” (eliminar el discurso de odio) que lanzaremos en nuestras escuelas a principios de año. Tenemos una gran comunidad inclusiva en nuestro distrito. Sin embargo, es fácil que nuestra comunidad se vea afectada por los sucesos relacionados con el odio que hemos visto en todo el país, en las noticias, en las redes sociales y que han ocurrido localmente. Estamos comprometidos a crear condiciones inclusivas y equitativas para nuestros estudiantes y miembros del personal y no hay lugar para el discurso de odio o conductas similares en nuestro distrito. Nuestras familias y estudiantes verán esfuerzos muy intencionados para educar a nuestros estudiantes sobre los efectos devastadores de la conducta relacionada con el odio y qué hacer si se enfrentan a ella.
