Dear New Haven Families,
For me, nothing kicks off a new school year more than watching our extracurricular programs get underway. I have the joy of watching the James Logan High School Band and Color Guard practice on the field behind our district office almost everyday. They look and sound awesome! This week, our athletic programs begin competition in earnest. It is worth noting that our Logan Colts Football Team is currently ranked 17th in the Bay Area. Rankings for our other teams are not out yet but our volleyball, water polo, cross country, and tennis teams are always very competitive. I hope you all have the opportunity to come out and support our fall programs at our middle schools and high schools.
As a reminder, cash will no longer be accepted at the gate for high school events that require purchasing a ticket. All ticket purchases must be made through GoFan. A QR code with a link to the GoFan site can be found at every gate to an event and on the Logan High School website.
We continue to make progress toward the full implementation of our new student information system, Aeries. Next week we plan to launch the Aeries Parent Portal. This will be a big step in providing easier access to information, such as attendance and grades, for our students and parents. Our sites will be sending out information about when and how this will happen.
We had a successful launch of our Eliminate Hate campaign this week. Students were involved with activities at all of our school sites including:
- Emanuele Elementary held a “Walk and Roll to School” event where students and families marched with anti-hate signs
- Students at Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School signed the anti-hate pledge and hung up anti-hate posters.
- Alvarado Elementary students signed a pledge to eliminate hate speech.
- Students at Cesar Chavez Middle School drafted their own eliminate hate pledge based on classroom eliminate hate curriculum.
- Students at Logan High School received “Eliminate Hate” bracelets and a healthy snack to start their day.
- Hillview Crest Elementary students colored and shared inspirational posters
- Families at our Back to School Nights watched a message from Superintendent Thompson regarding the importance of anti-hate and a positive school climate.
- Students at Conley-Caraballo High School signed an anti-hate pledge.
I am proud of the efforts of our staff and students to proactively work to keep our schools places where ALL students and staff members belong.
That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend.

Estimadas familias de New Haven,
John Thompson, Ed.D.
