Dear New Haven Families,
Several weeks ago, I addressed the violence against Asian and Pacific Islanders. I am saddened to see that the hate crimes and violence targeting people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent continues. Our Asian and Pacific Islander families and staff members help make our district the great place that it is. The diverse community that makes our district special should be celebrated. There is no place for racism or violence targeting our Asian/Pacific Islander community or any other community in our district. I believe that we are better than this in New Haven. I strongly encourage any students or families who are subjected to any discrimination or violence to immediately report the incident to your school site administrators. We have no tolerance for this type of conduct in OUR district.
As we head toward spring break and the final weeks of our school year, we continue to explore options and opportunities for our students for the remainder of the year, for summer, and for the 2021-22 school year. As I’m sure you are aware, there are many questions about the guidance regulating everything from in-person instruction to large events. The Centers for Disease Control seem to be preparing to change the distancing guidance from six feet to three feet. I also expect to see more clarity about what we can and can’t do with groups of students soon. This will affect how we organize after-school activities and end-of-the-year events. It can also help us with our planning for the reopening of school next year. If the three-foot guidance becomes official, we should be able to reopen schools in the fall without the limitations of the hybrid schedules that make in-person instruction a challenge for all school districts. It will also allow us to have more flexibility in scheduling students into our summer programs. I expect more information about this to come in the upcoming weeks.

Estimadas Familias de New Haven,
Hace varias semanas hablé de la violencia en contra de descendientes de las Islas del Pacífico y Asia. Me entristece ver que los delitos de odio y la violencia contra las personas de ascendencia Asiática y de las Islas del Pacífico continúan. Nuestras familias y miembros del personal Asiáticos e Isleños del Pacífico ayudan a que nuestro distrito sea el gran lugar que es. Se debe celebrar la diversidad de la comunidad la cual hace que nuestro distrito sea tan especial. No hay lugar para el racismo o la violencia en contra de nuestra comunidad Asiática / Isleña del Pacífico o cualquier otra comunidad en nuestro distrito. Creo que somos mejores que esto en New Haven. Recomiendo encarecidamente a todos los estudiantes o familias que estén sujetos a discriminación o violencia a que informen de inmediato el incidente a los administradores de su escuela. No toleraremos este tipo de conducta en NUESTRO distrito.
A medida que nos dirigimos hacia las vacaciones de primavera y las últimas semanas de nuestro ciclo escolar, continuamos explorando opciones y oportunidades para nuestros estudiantes para el resto del año, durante el verano y durante el ciclo escolar 2021-22. Como estoy seguro de que ya está enterado, hay muchas preguntas sobre la orientación que regula todo, desde la instrucción presencial hasta los grandes eventos.
