A Message from Superintendent Thompson

January 8, 2021

Happy first Friday of the year! Given the events of the week, I’m glad Friday is here and that this one is behind us. Our New Haven community values equity, diversity, and social justice. The events that occurred in Washington were clearly contrary to these values. I am proud of the way that our staff, students, and families handled these incredibly disturbing and disruptive events, however, I am not surprised; our community is strong, resilient, and supportive.

There are new developments that affect schools that are worth noting and paying attention to. First, over the winter break, Governor Newsom announced his “Safe Schools for All” plan intended to accelerate the opening of schools. In brief, this plan, IF APPROVED, would incentivize schools to reopen for in-person instruction. While I am happy that Governor Newsom realizes that there is a need for additional State guidance for schools, this plan generates more questions than answers in its current form. A coalition of superintendents representing the largest school districts in California has already written a letter to Governor Newsom asking him to revise this plan. For us in the NHUSD, it does not appear that anything in this plan will have an immediate impact on our ability to reopen.

In addition, the Governor released his preliminary State budget today for the 2020-21 fiscal year beginning on July 1. I will need to see all of the details of the budget before I can assess how this will affect our district. The preliminary review that has been shared with me is that we can expect to have more one-time money for the upcoming school year to help offset our COVID-19 related costs and to help with learning loss recovery. I will share more information when I know more about the details.

While 2021 hasn’t started the way any of us would have liked with the violence in Washington and pandemic surges, I remain very optimistic about the new year. We are already planning ahead for what summer and the new year will look like, and with vaccine availability increasing, I am optimistic that the end to the pandemic is imminent.

So, hang in there everyone and have a good weekend.

Sincerely,

John Thompson, Ed.D

Atentamente,

John Thompson, Ed. D.
