Institute of Community Learners Hosting Parent Night, Thursday, November 8th

Institute of Community Learners (ICL) families are invited to attend our next ICL Parent Night on Thursday, November 8th, at 6:30 p.m.  We will learn about graduation and college entrance requirements, and how the ICL course sequence helps students prepare to meet both. We will meet in the James Logan Library Reference Room.  We hope to see you there!

November is Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month

The California State Legislature has designated November as Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month.  During the month of November, the local Sikh community will be showcasing Sikh Heritage and highlighting Sikhs in history through a series of galleries across the city.  Sikhs have lived in the United States for more than a century, with many settling in Union City over the past few decades. They have made vital contributions to the life and economy of California for many years.  The main goal of these galleries is to educate and bring awareness to the local community about Sikhs.

More information about the galleries can be found here and below:

1) City Hall - carries most of the historic artifacts particularly from the Sikh Empire, Sikhs in World Wars and other items related to Sikh history. Special thanks to Sonia Dhami, Harpreet S. Sandhu and Amrinder Singh for lending us their collections

2) Mark Green Sport Center - carries images of Sikhs from around the globe to right here at home in Union City. We also have an exclusive display of Indian miniature painting and Gurmukhi Calligraphy by a renowned artist, Rupy C. Tut

3) Union City Library - will carry artifacts relevant to literature and youth

Union City Family Center (formerly Kids' Zone)
Please consider donating to the Union City Family Center (UCFC).  We are currently in need of cleansing and hygiene products for families in need: Toothpaste, Deodorant, Shampoo, Conditioner, Lotion, and Bars of Soap.

The Union City Family Center is now an Alameda County Food distribution site! Food will be distributed every Tuesday that school is in session from 3:30 pm - 5:30 p.m. UCFC is located at 725 Whipple Road, Union City, CA (on the Barnard-White Middle School campus). Volunteers are welcome!

Take the Challenge for New Haven!
Once again, the New Haven Schools Foundation (NHSF) has been selected as a beneficiary of the Rotary Chili Pepper Challenge! The Rotary Club of FUN Sunset and other Tri-Cities Rotary Clubs match donations two-to-one!

Foundation President John Shockley took the Challenge at our recent board meeting to get the ball rolling. It's super-easy to participate and donations of any size are appreciated.

Eat a pepper or a cookie... we don't care! Shoot a video and challenge friends. Make a donation at www.hotchilipepperchallenge.com.  You can watch NHSF President John Shockley’s video here.

Skip the video and just make a donation. But please tell your friends. You can mail a check payable to the Niles Rotary Foundation to our PO Box below, OR make a credit card donation here.
