Board Briefs for Tuesday, September 4, 2018

At Tuesday night's Board meeting, the Board introduced their two, new student representatives; Jocelyn Romero, from Logan High School and Neilani Martinez from Conley-Caraballo High School.

James Williams, Logan High School’s Athletic Director, provided the Board with information regarding the athletic programs offered at the site.  He first shared the many successes that Logan athletics accomplished last year including nine of the school’s teams earning first place finishes in the league.  He informed the Board that Logan’s nearly 1,000 student athletes had a combined grade point average of 3.18, well above the minimum 2.00. Mr. Williams also explained the school’s coaching philosophy and the difference between Transactional Coaching (a coach who is in it for themselves) and Transformational Coaching (a coach who seeks to instill life lessons and character in athletes).  Mr. Williams’ presentation can be found here.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the 2017-18 Unaudited Actuals Financial Report was presented to the Board for approval by Chief Business Officer Annette Heldman.

Ms. Heldman noted the budget shortfall, also commonly referred to as “deficit spending”, of $5 million, which had to be offset by the fund balance. This means expenditures were $5 million higher than the revenues in fiscal year 2017-18.

Additionally Ms. Heldman highlighted the expense breakdown as well as other key data points, including the actual ending balance, as well as the contributions to restricted/mandated programs, all of which directly impact the District’s operating budget.

The Board also approved a resolution in honor of Latino Heritage Month which seeks to celebrate the contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.  The resolution can be found here.
