New Haven Unified Elementary Extravaganza, Thursday, March 8th and 9th
The New Haven Unified School District is hosting the first ELEMENTARY EXTRAVAGANZA!!  This will be a performing arts event showcasing the choirs and musical groups from all seven of our elementary schools in a single performance (over 500 performing students!).

Please help us spread the word for this exciting evening and plan to join us!!

Date: Thursday, March 8th and Friday, March 9th - 7:00 pm
Location: Logan Pavilion 1800 H Street Union City 94587
Tickets: $10.00 + processing fee

Minutes from the District's Guiding Coalition / LCAP Meeting
The Guiding Coalition met on February 15, 2018.  California Dashboard Data regarding our progress on the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) was shared.  

In addition to examining the Dashboard Data, the Guiding Coalition discussed possible future plans and learned about the governor's proposed budget.  For more detailed information on the meeting, please read the Guiding Coalition Minutes for February 15, 2018.

Pioneer Elementary Student Qualifies for Regional Finals of Scripps Spelling Bee

Fifth grade Pioneer Elementary student, Maneesha Nair, has made it to the regional finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. In the written semi-final on February 10, she competed with 191 students, from elementary to 8th grade, from all around the Bay Area. She is one of only fifty students to make it to the final, which will be in oral format. The finals will take place on March 17, at the KPIX studios in San Francisco, and the competition will be broadcast live on the KPIX website. Congratulations, Maneesha, and good luck!


Logan Student Named as National Honorable Mention in Award for Aspirations in Computing

Logan student and Emanuele Elementary Robotics Team Coach, Riya Arora, was selected as a 2018 National Honorable Mention (NHM) recipient of the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) Award for Aspirations in Computing.  There were over 3,600 applications for the 2018 Aspirations Award and the National Honorable Mentions represent the top 10% of all applicants.  More information about the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Awards can be found here.

Logan’s Institute for Community Leaders (ICL) to Host Information Night on Thursday, March 1

There will be a family information night for incoming 9th graders and their parents who would like to learn more about Logan's School-Within-a-School - The Institute of Community Leaders (ICL).  Please join ICL students and teachers to learn more about our program for college-bound students!  We will meet on Thursday, March 1st, at 6:30pm at the James Logan High School Center for the Performing Arts.  More information about the event can be found here.


Logan Soccer Player is Member of Groundbreaking Afghanistan International Women’s Team

Logan senior Zinet Siddiqi is a member of the Afghanistan International Women’s Football (Soccer) Team.  The BBC published a fascinating article about the challenges these women face.  The article can be found here.


2018 Alameda County Transition Information Faire - March 24, 2018
The Transition Faire is an opportunity for students and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, service providers and school district staff to learn about life after high school. NH PASE is proud to announce our annual scholarships for 2017-18.  These scholarships were established to support students of Filipino and Filipino-American descent, and their college endeavors.

Boys and Girls Logan Wrestling Have Strong Showing at State and NCS

Congratulations to the Logan Girls Wrestling Team as they placed 6th in the CIF Girls State Meet in Visalia this past weekend. The Lady Colts were led by state runner-up Emily Sandoval and Lizette Rodriguez.  Julie Tran also placed 6th at the tournament.  Great job girls!

The Logan Boys Wrestling Team had five place winners from NCS this past weekend held at James Logan High School. The Colts qualified two to the CIF State Wrestling Meet this coming week in Bakersfield. They are Romeo McNeal who placed 2nd at NCS and Aaron Perez who placed 3rd. Other place winners for the Colts were Sean Pamintuan-7th, RJ Manahan-7th, and Irvin Garnica-8th

ELA/ ELD Instructional Materials (Grades K-5) on Display / Seeking Input
The New Haven Unified School District is in the process of piloting English Language Arts (ELA) and English Language Development (ELD) Instructional Materials for the elementary school level.  Two sets of materials have been piloted in our classrooms over the course of this school year, Benchmark Advance and Wonders by McGraw Hill School Education. These materials are now on display at the Educational Services Center (ESC).

We are seeking input and feedback from teachers, parents and community members to assist in informing our selection of materials.  Teachers, parents and community members are asked to review these materials.  Once individuals have completed their review of the instructional materials, they will be given an opportunity to provide feedback and input.

The materials will be on display at the ESC adjacent to the Technology Lab until March 20, 2018.

Call for Proposals - 2018 Personalization Summit

Calling all innovators! Are you future ready?  Is there a part of your practice that you can share with other educators? We are seeking people who are passionate about innovative ideas in education!!  If you are interested, please complete a CALL FOR PROPOSALS.

All New Haven teachers whose proposals are selected will receive hourly pay for planning time and for presenting.

JLHS/Kids Zone Princess Club & Glam Squad Is Looking For Help To Help

The JLHS/KidsZone Princess Club & GlamSquad helps disadvantaged students attend Prom in style. Please donate gently used gowns and accessories to replenish our closet. Any monetary donations will go towards the purchase of bids for our displaced and foster youth. Volunteer barbers will be needed on 5/3/18 and hairstylists and makeup artists are needed on 5/5/18.

Union City Library Hosting Nowruz Celebration March 3

Nowruz is the celebration of the New Year (Spring Equinox) in Afghanistan, Iran and Tajikistan.  A Nowruz celebration, with a dance performance by the Shahrzad Dance Academy, and Persian music by the Amir School of Music, will be held on Saturday, March 3, from 3:00-4:40 pm.  More information about the event can be found here.

 

This event is part of a series of 300 free Art IS Education events for youth and families presented by Alameda County Library in partnership with the Alameda County Arts Commission and the Alameda County Office of Education to celebrate arts education and creativity.

 

The Union City Library is a branch of the Alameda County Library system located at 34007 Alvarado-Niles Road, and is wheelchair accessible.

The New Haven Adult School will be offering an evenings only, instructor-led Microsoft Excel 2016 class beginning Thursday, March 29.  Click here for more information about the course.

  4. Our office will enroll you in FREE study lab for Feb 15 - Mar 22nd  AND in the $45.00 Intermediate Excel 2016 (starts March 29th). We will email your class information to you.
  5. Call or stop by our office to pay your class fee.
