Luna Mexicana: Day of the Dead Celebration
The Division of Teaching and Learning and the Oakland Ballet Company are proud to present Luna Mexicana: Day of the Dead Celebration. This professional theatrical dance production celebrates Dias De Los Muertos (Day Of The Dead). It will be an exciting, lavish, vibrant evening of visual and performing art and entertainment.
This event will be held at the James Logan High School Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 6:00pm. General admission tickets are $15.00 + processing fees and can be purchased online here.

NHSF to Benefit from Rotary Chili Pepper Challenge
Can you feel the heat? The New Haven Schools Foundation has been selected as a beneficiary of the Area 3 Rotary Hot Chili Pepper Challenge. Six Rotary Clubs in tri-cities have joined together in this annual fundraising appeal that raised over $40,000 for local charities last year. This year, Rotary will match your donations, so every dollar contributed will be matched by two dollars from Rotary until we reach $5000. The Mutt Strut Is Coming!
Attention dog lovers! The New Haven Schools Foundation is once again presenting its super-popular “Mutt Strut” event on Saturday, October 7. This is a great opportunity to bring the family to walk or run with your dog on the beautiful grounds of the Masonic Home in the Union City hills. There will be games and costume contests, dog training demonstrations, a pet adoption center, and other pet-related vendors. Individual and family tickets are on sale now at www.muttstrut.org. Guests receive an event t-shirt and a goody bag with lots of treats. In keeping with our participation as a beneficiary of the Rotary Chili Pepper Challenge, we will give a special award for the dog with the best chili pepper costume!
“Diamonds in Education” Gala Tickets on Sale Now
The New Haven Schools Foundation’s annual gala raises funds that support educational and extra-curricular programs in our schools. It will be held on Saturday, October 21 at the Paradise Palace / Mirage Ballroom, and features dinner and cocktails, casino games and prizes, DJ dancing, and auction items. This year, it will also recognize the NHUSD teacher and classified employee of the 2016-17 school year, Tina Bobadilla-Mastel and Susan Glenn. We will honor retired counselor Don del Pilar with the Guy Emanuele Community Service Award, and will present the City of Union City with the Tom Kitayama award for service by a business or organization. Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School College Fair to be held, Tuesday, October 10
The Eighth-Grade Project Based Learning students are throwing Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School’s annual College Fair. Parents, friends, and community members are invited to learn about colleges through student created presentations and displays.
The event will be held on Tuesday, October 10, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the IVCMS Gym.
Zumba with Mimi at Guy Emanuele!
Join Mimi and Judith at Guy Emanuele on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 pm for a super fun Zumba class! Classes are free this week. Future classes will be $5 and all proceeds go to the school. Please see the flier for more details. Zumba classes will continue at Cesar Chavez Middle School on Monday and Wednesday at 6:30 pm and Saturdays at 9 am.

New Haven Equity Council
The New Haven Equity Council will hold its first meeting of the year on Tuesday, October 10th at 4:00 pm. The meeting will be held at Cesar Chavez Middle School.

The New Haven Equity Council, formed in 2009 as the Equity Task Force, will continue to meet once per month this school year and will continue to address the priority issues of:
Improving the level to which curriculum, instruction, and grading address students’ cultural and individual needs, including materials, learning modalities, learning targets and assessments.
Ensuring that students have safe and adequate opportunities to address issues of race, culture, gender orientation and religion by providing for student voice and perspective, and a process for democratic action.
Supporting district staff and families with understanding the definition of Equity and Social Justice, by providing professional development and workshops.

October is Filipino American History Month
PASE, in partnership with FANHS ( Filipino-American National Historical Society) will be hosting a Filipino-American History Month Celebration at Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School on Saturday, October 14th, from 10am-4pm. The event is free and open to the public. Guest speakers include Former Golden State Warrior, Raymond Townsend and Supervisor Richard Valle. There will also be performances by our New Haven students! Cool Tools Conference in New Haven
East Bay CUE is proud and excited to partner with New Haven Unified School District to present Cool Tools for Learning, Fall 2017: The event for TK-12 teachers who think, lead, and change education one student at a time.
Registration will be free for the first 50 NHUSD registrants. You'll receive breakfast, lunch, either a new or one year CUE membership renewal, .4 units of District credit, and you'll walk away with mind-blowing tech integration ideas you can use in your classroom on Monday!

Union City Kids' Zone - Please Consider Donating Non-Perishable Food Items!
Union City Kids' Zone Resource Center houses a Food & Clothing Pantry available to any student, family and community member. We accept nonperishable food items, basic household & toiletry goods, and gently used clothing. Click here for a list of “high-need” items.
Pantry hours are Mondays from 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm and Thursdays from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm or by appointment (510) 476-2770. If you are interested in donating to the Union City Kids' Zone Food & Clothing Pantry - the following items are still in need: pasta sauce, noodles, dried or canned beans, tuna, crackers, cup-o-noodles, top ramen, macaroni and cheese (please visit our website to learn more about donatable items).
