District African American Advisory Council, Tuesday, September 12

The District African American Advisory will meet Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 5:45 pm. The meeting will be held at the Education Service Center, 34200 Alvarado-Niles Road.

Free and Informative Fatherhood Class To Start October 12 at IVCMS

The R3 Academy Fatherhood Class is set to start at Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School on Thursday, October 12, at 6:00 pm.  Called the R3 Academy due to it’s focus on three of the most important relationships in a father’s life (with his child/children, with his children’s mother, and with colleagues at work), participants will learn communication skills, job search and money management skills that will positively impact all these relationships.

Fathers and expectant fathers interested in this multi-week class are encouraged to attend one of the Information Nights:

  • Thursday, Sept. 14 – 6:00-7:00 pm
  • Thursday, Sept. 28 – 6:00-7:00 pm

Ghebray Invitational Cross Country Event, Saturday, September 23

The Ghebray Invitational, hosted by the James Cross Country Team, will be held on Saturday September 23, at Quarry Lakes.  There will races for all ages: an elementary race, a middle school race, high school races and open races.  Any attendee in the New Haven Unified School District is able to participate for free.

This event is in honor Giliat and Yoesf Ghebray, the top to distance runners in the history of James Logan High School and Union City.  Both went to Cal Berkeley, were All-Americans and semi-finalists at the Olympic Trials in the 5000 meters.  Please click here for more information about this event.

Cross Country Team members will collecting donations for hurricane victims in Texas and Florida.  All proceeds from the meet will be donated to hurricane victims.

New Haven Equity Council
The New Haven Equity Council will hold its first meeting of the year on Tuesday, October 10th at 4:00 pm. The meeting will be held at Cesar Chavez Middle School.

The New Haven Equity Council, formed in 2009 as the Equity Task Force, will continue to meet once per month this school year and will continue to address the priority issues of:

  • Improving the level to which curriculum, instruction, and grading address students’ cultural and individual needs, including materials, learning modalities, learning targets and assessments.
  • Ensuring that students have safe and adequate opportunities to address issues of race, culture, gender orientation and religion by providing for student voice and perspective, and a process for democratic action.
  • Supporting district staff and families with understanding the definition of Equity and Social Justice, by providing professional development and workshops.

"Meet & Greet" for Parents of Students with Special Needs
Mission Valley SELPA Community Advisory Committee is hosting a "Meet & Greet" on Thursday, September 21, 2017, at 6:00pm at Kids’ Zone, 725 Whipple Avenue, Union City, CA 94587. Join special education administrators and New Haven families for appetizers and conversation. Learn about what’s new in special education in New Haven Unified School District and network with other parents of students with special needs.

Luna Mexicana: Day of the Dead Celebration
The Division of Teaching and Learning and the Oakland Ballet Company are proud to present Luna Mexicana: Day of the Dead Celebration. This professional theatrical dance production celebrates Dias De Los Muertos (Day Of The Dead). It will be an exciting, lavish, vibrant evening of visual and performing art and entertainment.

This event will be held at the James Logan High School Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 6:00pm. General admission tickets are $15.00 + processing fees and can be purchased online here.

October is Filipino American History Month

October is Filipino American History Month! To kick it off, the Filipino-American Educators Association (FAEAC) is hosting its biennial conference on September 29-30 in San Diego. PASE (Pilipino-American Society For Education) will be co-hosting this conference. Curriculum for Assembly bills 123 ( Filipinos in the Farm Labor Movement) and 199 (World War II in the Philippines) will be debuted. These lessons are aligned to the new CA History/Social Science Framework. For information on registration, please visit

PASE, in partnership with FANHS ( Filipino-American National Historical Society) will be hosting a Filipino-American History Month Celebration at Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School on Saturday, October 14th, from 10am-4pm. The Mutt Strut Is Coming!
Attention dog lovers! The New Haven Schools Foundation is once again presenting its super-popular “Mutt Strut” event on Saturday, October 7. This is a great opportunity to bring the family to walk or run with your dog on the beautiful grounds of the Masonic Home in the Union City hills. There will be games and costume contests, a pet adoption center, and pet-related vendors. Save the Date for “Diamonds in Education”
The New Haven Schools Foundation’s annual gala raises funds that support educational and extra-curricular programs in our schools. It will be held on Saturday, October 21 at the Paradise Palace / Mirage Ballroom, and features dinner and cocktails, casino games and prizes, DJ dancing, and auction items. This year, it will also recognize the NHUSD teachers and classified employees of the 2016-17 school year, and honor a local organization and an individual who have given extraordinary effort to supporting education in our community.
