Message from NHUSD Superintendent, Dr. John Thompson

Dear New Haven Parents,

I am reaching out to you today while still struggling to process the events of last Saturday which took the lives of two of our community’s children.  Though we might not yet know all that happened that night, we do know that the two boys were taken from us much too soon.

I want to share with you what the district will be doing to support those affected by this tragedy when school resumes on Monday, December 2.

Staff at each site will meet first thing Monday morning to discuss the plan for the day and learn the plan for students who need additional support.  Each school in the district will be supported by at least one district or community-based mental health professional.  Staff will evaluate the needs of each site and will redeploy support staff as needed.

Given the nature of the loss, each school in the district will participate in a moment of silence for the two lost boys.

The Union City Police Department does not believe that this incident is school-related, and we do not anticipate there will be a safety-related impact on our schools.  Accordingly, all school activities will continue as normal next week.

This level of tragedy is unprecedented for us at New Haven and we are still struggling to process these events.  Together we will do all that we can to support our students and staff.

John Thompson, Ed.D.
