Register for the Personalization Summit

Only ten spots left!


This year we are offering a three-day Personalization Summit to the first 250 registrants.  Here are the particulars:

Dates:  Monday, June 12, 13, and 14, 2017
Times: 8:00am – 3:00pm (with a one hour lunch) With food trucks again!
Location: Conley-Caraballo High School
Compensation: Certificated/classified hourly rate or 1.2 units of district credit

The Summit will begin with a Keynote from Jaime Casap from Google and will include many offerings on personalization, technology use and integration, and personalizing learning to meet the social/emotional needs of students, and more.  Please click on this form to register for the Summit, and to learn about some of the sessions being offered this year.

Logan High School Boasts Two 2017 National Merit Scholars

This year’s 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners have been announced.  Of the 318 California awardees, two are from James Logan High School.  The scholarship recipients were judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies.


Logan senior Michelle Chiu, will use her $2,500 scholarship to pursue her interest in genetics and Logan senior Vincent Peng will use his to pursue his interest in biomedical engineering.

Writer’s Workshop Institute
The Division of Teaching & Learning is proud to present a day long institute for Writer’s Workshop on August 8, 2017 from 8:00-3:00 at the ESC. The institute will offer participants a variety of topics to choose from including: Launching the Writer’s Workshop for new teachers or new to WW teachers, Conferring, Integrating Technology, Immersion & Mentor Text, Informational Writing, and Opinion/Argument Writing. The institute is open for teachers in grades TK-8th, participants may choose to be paid their hourly rate or receive .4 units of district credit. We hope to see you there!

NHUSD Kids First Art Project Showcased at Alameda County Fair

New Haven Unified's Kids First program, a before and after-school child care service located at each of the seven elementary schools, has entered an impressive group project in the Alameda County Fair.  This year’s "Smack of Jellies" will be located in Building D at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds from June 19, through July 9, 2017. The individual jellyfish were made by students each elementary school’s Kids First program and assembled into a group, or "smack" to display at the Fair.

If you attend the Alameda County Fair please check out this and all the other individual art projects entered by the students in Kids First.  

Retiring Long-Time NHUSD Teachers to Have Celebration on Friday, June 2

After 65 combined years of teaching, the Forrests are retiring! Come join Dave and Marilyn for a celebration of their many contributions to James Logan High School and the New Haven Unified School District over the years.  The party will be on June 2nd, starting at 4:00 pm.  Click here for further details and to RSVP by May 24th.


Special Education Recognition Awards (SERA) Nominations Now Being Accepted
Do you know a staff member who really supported your special education student? Nominate them for a SERA award!

Who should be nominated for the SERA Award?  We believe nominees should be special individuals, who benefit the lives of our students with special needs.  Nominees should demonstrate a variety of the following qualities and characteristics:

  • Hold high expectations for all learners.
  • Have a positive attitude.
  • Be tolerant, willing to listen, and consider and respect the viewpoints of others.
  • Be generous with his/her time and energy.
  • Respect others, including colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and diplomacy in all situations.
  • Be sincere and gracious in challenging situations when working with students with special needs and their families.
  • Demonstrate exceptional contributions to the lives of students with special needs, including friendship, support and caring.
  • Demonstrate random acts of kindness that impacts students with special needs.
  • Be patient and, relentlessly encouraging.

Logan’s Prince/Princess Project Needs Your Help!

The Logan Prince/Princess Project will be loaning caps and gowns to graduating seniors who need them. They are in dire need of donations of red caps and gowns.  Anyone who has a red (or black) cap and gown to donate can bring it to Logan, attention Erin Dal Porto (room 42). Also, if you have borrowed a cap and gown in the past, we kindly ask you to return it to Erin Dal Porto as soon as possible.

Applications Now Being Accepted for Peer Language Model Program
New Haven Unified School District accepts a few typically developing peers to serve as language models in each of our preschool classrooms.  General education peers are placed according to availability. The Peer Language Model component is an important part of our program.  Children learn not only from adults, but from watching and interacting with other children.  New Haven is now accepting applications for Fall 2017.
