NHUSD School Board Student Member, Jaden Gray, Appointed to California State Board of Education
James Logan High School junior and New Haven Unified School Board Student Member, Jaden Gray, has been appointed to the California State Board of Education by Governor Brown. Gray has been an intern clerk in the Law Offices of John L. Burris since 2016 and a student at Logan High School since 2015. He is chair of the Union City Youth Commission, a founding member of the James Logan High School Young Democrats Club, a member of the California Association of Students Councils, and the James Logan High School Speech and Debate Team. This position requires Senate confirmation.
New Haven Schools Foundation Executive Director, Helen Kennedy, Honored
New Haven School Foundations Executive Director, Helen Kennedy, has been named Woman of the Year for Education in the 20th Assembly District by Assemblymember Bill Quirk. She was honored on Saturday, March 11 at the 4th Annual Woman of the Year Celebration at the Chabot College Event Center.

Logan Soccer Star Update
Congratulations to Logan soccer stars Zinet Siddiqi and Vanessa Mejia. Zinet recently competed for the women’s National team of Afghanistan at the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) tournament held in Kanchanjuna, Shiliguri, Inda.
Zinet was a starter and an impact player for all of the games played at the Kanchenjunga Stadium, which has a capacity of thirty thousand fans.
Vanessa was recently selected to the Elite Club National League Player Development Program National Training Camp held in Portland Oregon. This is a very prestigious honor that athletes from the best clubs and teams from all over the United States were invited to. Also included in this event were current U.S. youth national team U-18 members, NSCAA All American players and Parade Magazine High School All Americans.
Both Vanessa and Zinet are currently being recruited by NCAA division I and II universities.
Winter Guard International, Union City Regional, to Be Held Next Weekend at Logan
James Logan High School will host the 2017 Union City WGI Color Guard Contest this weekend. Preliminaries start on Saturday, March 18, with about forty groups in attendance and finals are on Sunday, March 19. Please click here for more information.
Alameda County Reading Association to Host Book Club for Semester Credit
Need semester units? Join Alameda County Reading Association for a chance to engage in conversation and learning centered around growth mindset. Read A Mindset for Learning, by Christine Hertz and Kristine Mraz. Then, join ACRA for a book club discussion. Earn a semester unit while doing so. The Cesar Chavez Middle School STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Robotics Team could use support from parents and high school students who are interested in coaching and mentoring younger students. Applications Now Being Accepted for Peer Language Model Program
New Haven Unified School District accepts a few typically developing peers to serve as language models in each of our preschool classrooms. General education peers are placed according to availability. The Peer Language Model component is an important part of our program. Children learn not only from adults, but from watching and interacting with other children. New Haven is now accepting applications for Fall 2016. Writing Workshop: Informational Writing
Come join us for an afternoon of Writer’s Workshop professional development where we will grow our work on informational writing with a focus on research writing. Participants will be given time to plan for immersion, develop a model piece of writing and collaboratively plan teaching points for informational writing.

E4K Day at UC Berkeley
Union City Kids' Zone took 94 4th - 6th grade students from NHUSD to UC Berkeley's Engineering 4 Kids Day on Saturday, March 11, 2017. Students took part in a variety of hands-on math and science related activities (i.e., Programming and commanding robots, Constructing electrical circuitry, Building DNA, Imagining alternative energy, Testing aerodynamics, Understanding sustainability, and Constructing dams). Thank you to all NHUSD staff and parents for chaperoning!
